Abstract
513,739. Cathode-ray tubes : luminescent materials. FERNSEH AKT.-GES. April 19, 1938, No. 11716. Convention date. April 15. 1937. [Class 39 (i)] In order that the luminescent screen of a cathode-ray tube may be readily cooled it is mounted on an opaque sheet of metal forming part of the envelope and adapted to be cooled on its outer surface. Fig. 1 shows a screen 4 mounted on a metal sheet 6 the edges of which are sealed into the envelope 1. Coding-liquid such as water or oil, or gas, such as ammonia, may be circulated inside the space behind the plate 6 through pipes 8, 9. The screen is scanned by a beam from an electron gun 3 in a side arm 2 and the image is projected by a lens 5, the light passing through the plane end wall 10 of the envelope. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 the plate 6 forms the bottom of a receptacle which may be filled with liquid air, the envelope of the tube forming a double wall which may be silvered internally at 16, as in a Dewar flask. The electron gun 3 is arranged at the other end of the tube and the image projected by a lens 5 and inclined mirror 15. The tube may be formed with a joint 17 which can be broken when it is desired to change the screen. The sheet 6 may be of copper provided with a chrome iron edge for sealing to the glass and coated with aluminium or platinum to protect it from the luminescent material.
