Abstract

513,219. Continuous metal-heating furnaces. BIRMINGHAM ELECTRIC FURNACES, Ltd., and TANNER, T. G. April 1, 1938, No. 9959. [Class 51 (ii)] In the continuous heat treatment of metal articles which are contaminated by oil or grease, the articles are passed, before entering the main heating-chamber b, through a preheating chamber d maintained at a constant temperature between the volatilization and cracking temperatures of the oil or grease, the oil vapours being removed by a stream of non- oxidizing or reducing gas which is circulated through the furnace in counter-current with the articles. The outflowing protective gas may be passed through a condenser or filter i and a burner apparatus j, for the removal of oil vapour and oxygen respectively, and recirculated through the furnace by a pump h. A portion e of the furnace between the main and preheating sections is fitted with a cooling- jacket to reduce the temperature of the circulating gas to below the cracking temperature of the oil.
