Process and device for the thermal extraction of magnesium.
The thermal extraction of magnesium by reducing magnesium oxide or substances containing it with reducing agents such as calcium carbide, aluminum, silicon and the like, has been carried out either in externally heated iron retorts or muffles or in electrode furnaces. While in the latter case the better use of heat due to the internal heating had an advantage, the formation of carbon oxide made possible by the oxidation of the electrodes makes a loss-free recovery of the magnesium as a result of reoxidation impossible.
Both processes have the disadvantage that the heat development is not uniform through the entire reaction mass.
In order to avoid these disadvantages, according to the invention, the development of magnesium from the reaction mixture is essentially brought about by radiant heat by the reaction
EMI1.1
For example, made of carbon, graphite, molybdenum, silicon carbide or chromium-nickel alloys. The reaction mixture, which is advantageously used in briquette form, is expediently guided by means of a mechanical transport device, be it that the stove on which the reaction mixture is spread is moved as such past the radiation elements, or that the reaction mixture is moved over the stationary hearth by a movable grate, for example of the type of the well-known Redler grates, is conveyed away with constant circulation.
The process according to the invention enables good utilization of the heat supplied and a very uniform development of magnesium vapor from the reaction mixture. The process can easily be designed continuously and is therefore also suitable for implementation on a large technical scale.
The drawing shows an example of a device for carrying out the method according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section, Fig. 2 is a cross section along one of the lines -B in Fig. 1. 1 shows a muffle furnace exposed with magnesite bricks, in the vault of which a number of electrically heated silicon rods 2 is inserted transversely to the longitudinal axis thereof. The reaction mixture is introduced into the furnace through the funnel 7, optionally provided with a lock, and guided by the conveyor J over the hearth of the furnace to the discharge 4, while the magnesium vapors developed through the tubes. ? be directed to condensation. The safety bars 2 are connected to the electrical current by the guide rails 8. By supplying an inert gas, e.g. B.
Hydrogen, at 6 a moderate overpressure is maintained in the furnace to prevent air from entering.
