Abstract
513,104. Screw propellers. LAVAUD, R. S. DE. Dec. 28, 1937, No. 35916. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1936. [Class 114J Automatic variable-pitch screw propellers wherein the blades are inclined to the shaft axis and are movable for pitch change under the influence of air forces on the blade and a torsional restraint at the root thereof are further provided with unstable wedge members at the root re-acting under side thrust thereon which except in the mean pitch setting tend to. move the blade further from that setting. An inclined blade 3 has screwed to its root 4 one end of a torsion rod 2, the other end of which is secured to a member 5 which is held in the propeller boss 1 by a ball 11. The member 5 is given a spherical seating surface 6 within a boss 7 in the hub and it is adjustable by movement of the ball when rods 12, 13 are set by means of the screws 14. The heads of the torsion rods 2 are provided with longitudinal V-grooves 15. 16 disposed at right-angles around the axis. These are engaged bv wedge members 17, 18 carried in housings 20, 21 wherein are adjustable bearing blocks 19. These blocks are set so that when the propeller is rotated the action exerted by the root of the blade on the hub as a result of centrifugal forces on the blades, produces a reaction tending to turn the blades away to. extreme pitch settings.
