Abstract

311,472. Cook, F. Feb. 18, 1928. Screw propellers.-The pitch of screw propeller blades is varied automatically by the thrust under the control of a spring, for which purpose the boss of the blade moves longitudinally along the shaft to an extent limited by adjustable stops, the blades and the sleeve on the shaft being coupled by levers. A buffer cylinder acting as a dash-pot may be provided also. The axis of the blades is arranged so that the centre of fluid pressure thereon is close to that axis. Blades 5 secured to sleeves 2 are pivotally mounted in sockets on the boss 1 and at the root is secured an arm 6 which is connected by pins 10 to a sleeve 7 adapted to be secured to the shaft 3. The boss 1 has a collar 12 which abuts against the springs 11, the other end of which is held by a flange 13 on the shaft, this flange being adjustable for setting the spring and thus controlling the extent of pitch change. The boss is in driving engagement with the shaft and slides on keys or feathers 4. A fairing or spinner ring encloses the boss and other parts. Stops for limiting the motion of the boss are provided. On an extension of the boss and enclosing the shaft, is fitted a buffer cylinder whilst a piston is secured to the shaft itself and has smaller relief openings to provide a damping action. A collar fitted to the shaft may be moved thereon to limit the motion of the boss, such collar being under lever control from the cockpit of an aeroplane.
