[Class 131] An instrument for cutting hair comprises reciprocating rough and fine cutters, the rough toothed cutter operating first so that on again passing the instrument over the same surface the fine razor blade cutter effects a closer shave. The fine cutter may be detached to enable the rough cutter to be used alone. A massage pad may be attached to the reciprocating cutter. A driving-motor in the handle of the instrument casing 5 drives air-vanes 37 and a crankpin 16 which reciprocates both a straight. edged fine cutter blade 7 and a rough toothed cutter 11 located on opposite sides of a stationary guide plate 1 having protective and cutting teeth 9 shaped as shown. Air-vanes may also be provided on the crank hub 17. The fine cutter 7 may be removed by lifting a spring loop catch 22 and a retaining-plate 19. Spring pressed balls 41 bear on the rough cutter 11, the spring tension being adjusted by turning a cam-shaped collar 43. The toothed cutter 11 may comprise two inter-engaging toothed plates 28, 29, Fig. 6. The protecting cover 24 and parts of the transmission may be formed wholly or in part of insulating material. The cutting-head may be disposed at an acute angle to the motor shaft 18, Fig. 3.
