March 1, 1938, Nos. 6474 and 26130, [Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII, VII and XVI] Apparatus for cutting or marking buttonholes &c. comprises a plurality of cutters or markers mounted for relative adjustment to vary the spacing between them and interconnected by means which maintains a pre-determined spaced relationship in all adjusted positions, and means for actuating all the cutters or markers by a single operation. As shown, the cutters 8 are mounted on levers 6 pivoted and slidable on a rod 4 and coupled together by a lazy-tong arrangement 12 actuated by a hand-wheel 19, sprocket wheels 17, 18 and chain 16. The levers 6 are rocked by a cam 23 operable by -a foot-pedal attached to a cord passing round a pulley 24. The cam 23 cooperates with bolts 22 on the levers, one or more of which bolts are mounted in sleeves with quick-pitch screws so that they may be readily moved away from the cam to an inoperative position. The cutters consist of a punch 9 and a straight knife edge 8 and co-operate with a bed 10. They may be replaced or covered by a similarly shaped blunt tool 41 which causes the work to be marked by impregnated felt 44 placed on the bed 10. The work may be posi- 'tioned by an edge gauge 11 which may be adjustable relatively to the bed by a two-handed screw engaging the gauge and the bed; by this adjustment, part of the knife edge 8 may be moved off the bed 10 so as to produce buttonholes of different sizes. The levers 6 may carry arms to assist in positioning the cutters or markers relatively to the work. The lazy-tong arrangement may be replaced by a number of screws of different pitch, gear wheels of different diameters meshing with racks, or cables passing over drums of different sizes.
