Abstract
671,592. Paper punches. BURN & CO., Ltd., J. Aug. 25, 1950 [March 28, 1950], No. 7753/50. Class 31 (ii). A hand-operated paper punch having a number of aligned punches for punching a series of holes at one operation is provided with a pin which is so arranged that on displacing the punched paper in order that a further series of holes aligned with the first series may be punched in it, the pin engages in each of the punched holes in turn without hindering that displacement but limits displacement of the pin in the opposite direction and thus serves to position the paper for the further punching operation. In the form shown, the punches 14 are carried in a frame 16 on which the pin 36 is pivotally mounted so as to be in line with the punches, the pin normally hanging with its lower end in a slot 40 in the die-plate 10. The sheet P is located with respect to the line of punches by means of a shoulder 28 on the frame 16 and by means of the end 32 of a slide 30 adjustable in a slot 34 in the die-plate. In operation, after a first row of holes has been punched in the sheet, the latter is pulled to the right so as to abut against the pin and push it out of the way, the pin then resting on the surface of the paper and trailing over it. The pull on the sheet is then reversed so that the pin falls into one of the punched holes, the sheet being prevented from being pulled further to the left by the abutment of the pin against the side of the frame 16. After the edge of the sheet has been aligned with the shoulder 28, a second row of holes can be punched in the sheet in line with the first row of holes. The pin is preferably spaced from the extreme right-hand punch a distance equal to the pitch of the holes. The punches are of a cross-section to punch holes of round or other shape, and where the holes are round, the pin is of semi-cylindrical shape. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the pin is pivotally mounted in a slot in the die-plate.
