Abstract
529,007. Cutting and punching sheet material. STEVENS, A. H. (Rosback Co., F. P.). May 19, 1939, No. 14965. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for drilling and punching holes and slots in the edges of work such as stacks of paper, veneers &c. has a rotary hollow cutter and a non-rotary slotting cutter adjacent thereto, the two cutters being fed through the work by a cutter-head which is given a working stroke and then brought to rest. The rotary cutter 32 with a bevelled cutting edge is carried by a chuck 29 on a spindle 25 axially adjustable by a screw 21 in the cutter-head 18 and rotated by belt 89 from a motor 88. The slotting cutter 39, Figs. 3 and 9, is secured by a bolt 41 to a holder 40 adjustably attached at 43 to the head and arranged with a clearance of about one thousandth of an inch from the rotary cutter so that the slot formed thereby will run into the hole formed by the rotary cutter. The head is supported and guided by a tube 9 provided with a rack 15 engaging a pinion 17 rotated through gearing 53 and a one-revolution clutch from a motor 54 to feed the cutters into the work. The return stroke is effected by a spring 10. The final gear wheel 51 driven by the motor is loose on the pinion shaft 50, Fig. 7, and carries a clutch 55 co-operating with a clutch 56 splined to the shaft. A spring 60 normally maintains the clutch out of engagement, but when a pedal attached to a lever 69 is depressed by the operator a ratchet wheel 66 is rotated one tooth to move a plunger 64 axially and engage the clutch. A spring plunger 74 then passes into a recess 80 in the plunger to maintain the clutch engaged until a radial pin 61 on the clutch 56 completes a revolution and then meets a rod attached to the plunger 64 to withdraw it and allow the spring 60 to disengage the clutch. The spring 10 then returns the cutterhead 18 to its upper position, a pneumatic dashpot 81 providing a brake and reducing shock. A jewelled warning light on the front of the machine indicates when the switches for the motors 48, 54 and 88 are in the active positions. Cuttings are removed from the slotting-tool holder 40 by a duct 44 leading through the hollow support 9 to a suction fan 46 driven by a motor 48, and discs removed by the rotary cutter 32 pass up the centre of the cutter, into the chuck 29 and are drawn through a side opening in the chuck once in each revolution by a duct 31 leading to the fan. The cuttings are ejected into a bin 47. A presser foot 92 is urged downwards by a spring in the head 18 so that it may yield as the tools pass through the work and serves as a stripper to hold down the work as the tools are raised. A pad 193 of wood &c. receives the tools after they have passed through the work and may be removed from the table 2 for renewal by means of a hand-operated lever 195 and plunger 194. The work is positioned against fences 100, 113, Fig. 5, adjustably attached to the table 2 by thumb nuts 116 and carried by a V-shaped bracket 98 embracing the support 9. One edge of the work may be placed against a stop 112 carried by a bracket 97 provided with a handcontrolled finger 109 engaging collars 107 adjustable on a rod 104 by means of a scale 106 so that slots &c. may be formed at spaced intervals along the edge of the work. The bracket 97 is slidable along a rod 105 and the rods 104, 105 are carried by a frame 103 attached to the bracket 98.
