Abstract
529,006. Cutting and punching sheet material. STEVENS, A. H. (Rosback Co., F. P.). May 19, 1939, No. 14962. [Classes 31 (i) and 31 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for producing slotted apertures near the edges of stacks of sheets such as those used for loose-leaf ledgers &c. has drilling or punching and cutting tools carried by an indexable tool head and reciprocated axially below the work in timed relation with a presser foot and anvil operating above the work, the reciprocating and indexing means being synchronized so that the tools operate in sequence and are then indexed to inoperative position. The work 53 is placed on a table 1 against adjustable gauging ,elements 160, 162, Fig. 5, and the drill 73, Fig. 1, and cutter 74 are carried by sleeves 71, 72 mounted in a tool head 75, Fig. 9, pivoted about a vertical axis. The head is indexed by a lever 107, Fig. 3, pivoted to a spring link 108 connected to a crank pin on a disc 116 carrying a cam 114 which allows it to make a half revolution and then opens a clutch to bring it to rest. Each tool sleeve carries a lug 69 or 70, Figs. 2 and 3, the one in the operative position being engaged by a dog 68 on a vertically moving frame 56 to feed the tool upwardly into the work. The frame 56 is vertically slidable on a rod 38 which is itself vertically slidable in brackets 37 on the machine frame and carries a frame 40 provided with an adjustable work-clamping pad 49 and an anvil 52 arranged above the operative tool spindle. A. rack 421 actuated by a handoperated pinion unlocks the frame 40 from the rod 38 to enable it to be rotated to an inoperative position for adjustment purposes. The frame 56 is guided vertically by a bar 62, Fig. 8, on the machine bed and carries a cam 58, journalled therein at 57, which is driven by a pinion 60 rotated by a flexible shaft 31, Fig. 2, from a clutch 21 engageable with gearing 18 driven by a motor 5 through spur gears 10, shaft 12 and bevel gears 14. The clutch is engaged by a spring 25, Fig. 2A, but may be held in the open position by a pivoted latch 29. Operation.-To start the machine the operator depresses a pedal 35 which acts through link 34 and lever 32 to raise the latch 29, whereupon the motor rotates the cam 58. A bowl 66, Fig. 8, on an arm 65 guided by the bar 62 and attached to the rod 38 engages the cam, and the rod is thereby lowered to cause the pad 49 and anvil 52 to press down on the work. When further movement of the rod is prevented by the work, rotation of the cam raises the frame 56, and the dog 68 thereon engages the lug 69 on the drill sleeve 71 to feed the drill into the work to produce a hole 192, Figs. 20 and 22. After half a revolution the cam lowers the drill and raises the clamping head 40, and when the revolution is complete a dog 249, Fig. 3, on the cam 58 engages a lever 149 connected by linkage to a shaft 146. This shaft raises a vertically sliding rod 144, Figs. 2 and 2A, causing the end thereof to engage a lever 150 and rock a shaft 129 which carries a cam-finger 128, Fig. 3, normally in contact with a pin on a clutch sleeve 117. This releases the clutch and allows springs to couple it to a gear 121 driven through spur and bevel gears 122, 124 from the shaft 12 and motor 5, thereby rotating the crank disc 116 to index the tool head 75. After. half a revolution, the cam 114 on the disc 116 allows the finger 128 to drop and disengage the clutch 117, thus stopping the tool head with the cutter or punch sleeve 72 in operative position to be engaged by the dog 68 of the frame 56 on its second upward motion. The clamping head 40 is then brought down on the work and the cutter 74 pushed upwardly through the work to form a slot 193, after which the clamp is released and the cutter lowered. The dog 249, on completion of the revolution of the cam 58, again pushes the rod 144 upwards through the linkage 148 &c., but the half revolution of the disc 116 has caused a face cam to move a bell-crank lever 142, Fig. 2A, axially and place it in the path of a collar 143 on the rod, so that the lever is rocked to push out the clutch 21 by means of its second lever 140 and a yoke 23, the clutch being locked in the open position by the latch 29. This stops the cycle of operations of the machine, but a further arm 139 on the lever 142 actuates a link 183 connected by levers &c. 180 to a lever 178 carrying a gauge rod 174, Fig. 5; provided with stop collars 173. A pawl 167 pivoted on the carriage 164 carrying the gauge 162 is thereby released from the stop collar by springs 170 and the gauge may then be displaced by the operator to engage the pawl with the next collar for positioning the work for a subsequent aperture to be formed therein. The rod 174 may be adjusted axially relatively to its end bracket 175 by means of a screw 187 locked by a screw 190. The upward movement of rod 144 also actuates lever 150 to engage the clutch 117 to index the tool head back to its original position and the cam 114 then opens the clutch again. The operator may then depress the pedal 35 to start a cycle of operations on the next position of the work. If it is desired to omit operation by punching tool 74, the operator rotates a marked disc 157, Figs. 1 and 2, to rotate a crank pin 158, Fig. 2A, and displace a yoke 153 embracing the rod 144, whereby the latter is tilted out of reach of the lever 150 so that when the rod is raised after the first drilling operation, the tool head indexing mechanism will not be operated. A lug 155 on the yoke 153, however, moves the lever 142 together with the rod 144 so that the gauge rod 174 will be released from the pawl 167 to allow positioning of the work for the next hole and the clutch 21 will be opened to stop the cycle. Plain holes and slotted holes may thus be arranged in any desired order, as shown in Fig. 22, by manipulation of the disc 157. The tool head indexing mechanism may be operated to change the positions of the two tools by pulling on a handle 133, Fig. 3, to raise the finger 128. The punching tool consists of a sheet metal blade 74, Fig. 20, held by a screw 86 in a head 720 and located by ridges 88 relatively to a spacing block 87. The two sides of the cutting portions of the blade are in close contact over a large area, as shown at 881 and are curved at 882 to produce the required shape of slot. The drill spindle 97 is rotated from the motor shaft by a belt 94. When the disc 157 is set for single tool operation, the machine may be used for trimming corners by substituting a cutter 196, Fig. 22, for the cutter 74 and clamping gauge plates 195 to the base 160. A hood 89, Figs. 1-3, is connected to a suction device and draws cuttings from side apertures in the drill holder 71 and punch holder 720. The drill 73, which is preferably hollow, is secured within its socket 710, Fig. 16, by means of a pivoted detent 79 pressed by a spring 82 into engagement with an annular recess 81 therein, and rotation is prevented by a key 83 engaging an axial slot.
