512,189. Dyes. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 21, 1938, No. 21683. [Class 2 (iii)] Grey to black vat dyes of the dibenzanthrone series are made by treating 2.2<1>-dibenzanthronyl with a nitrating agent until two nitro groups are introduced into the molecule, reducing the dinitro compound so obtained to the corresponding diamino-2.2<1>-dibenzanthronyl, and fusing the latter with alkali hydroxide at between 190‹ C. and 250‹ C. in the presence of an alcohol having less than three carbon atoms. In examples, 2.2<1>-dibenzanthronyl is treated with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids, the product reduced with sodium sulphide and caustic soda, a d the diamino body fused with caustic potash and ethyl or methyl alcohol at about 200‹ C.
