Abstract

510,433. Coating surfaces by applying powdered materials. PEARCE, J. H. G., and PEARCE SIGNS, Ltd. Oct. 27,1937, No. 29412. Drawings to Specification. [Class 95] [Also in Group XV] In the manufacture of a fluorescent electric discharge device having an internal coating of fluorescent material, a uniform layer of a liquid binder for the fluorescent material is applied to the inner surface of the tube or envelope of the device by introducing the binder into the tube or envelope and then passing a stream of liquid, which does not adhere to the walls of the tube or envelope and which is immiscible with the binder, through the tube or envelope. Mercury is a suitable liquid for this purpose, and it may be passed through the tube by pressure or by suction, removing excess binder and leaving a thin uniformly distributed layer thereof, free from streaks or blemishes. The tube may be warmed during and/or immediately before the flow of mercury therethrough. The fluorescent material, in powder or other form, may be subsequently introduced into the coated tube, or may be previously incorporated with the binder.
