Abstract
468,531. Fluorescent screens. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 9, 1936, No. 10604. Convention date, April 11, 1935. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (i)] [Also in Group XXIII] In applying a coating of luminescent material to a vitreous surface within or forming part of a gas or vapour filled electric discharge tube, the vitreous body is coated with the material, preferably by applying the powdered material to a layer of binder such as glycerine, and the whole surface of the body is then subjected to a gas pressure above 1À25 atmospheres, usually of the order of 10 or 20 atmospheres whilst heated to a temperature at which it is soft. The material thus becomes embedded in the surface and the binder is evaporated, the resulting vapour being removed by finally evacuating the electrically heated drum in which the body is subjected to the gas pressure. During the heating, the drum is rotated to prevent distortion of the body by gravity. The interior surface of the envelope of a discharge lamp may be coated by this process, and the creation of pressure and a vacuum may be repeated several times. Specification 421,955 is referred to.
