Abstract
509,474. Speed governors ; fuelinjection pumps. EX-CELL-O CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1938, No. 1319. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1937. [Class 57] [Also in Group XXVIII] The delivery of a fuel injection pump is controlled by a speed governor, and the time of injection and a stop limiting the amount of fuel that may be injected are controlled by a second speed governor. The fuel injection pump comprises a number of parallel cylinders 22 having spring-loaded plungers 21 actuated by a swash-plate 57 rotated by a shaft 59. The pump cylinders 22 are supplied by a feed pump 39 and the suction ports 33 are controlled by a rotary valve 31 having grooves 34 and a projection 35 of varying width. The valve 31 is driven by the shaft 64 and is moved axially to vary the quantity delivered, and the phase relationship of the shafts 59, 64 is varied to adjust the time of injection. The valve 31 and the shaft 64 are connected by a coupling sleeve 74 which allows axial movement of the valve 31 which is adjusted by the rod 92 actuated by a centrifugal governor 95 which is loaded by an idling spring 107 and another spring 110, the loading of which is varied by adjusting the shaft 115. The springs 107, 110 act on arms 106, 109 of a three-armed lever, the other arm 105 engaging the abutment 101. The spindle 115 carries an arm 119, which engages a stop 120 to limit the maximum compression of the spring 110, and also another arm 130 which engages an arm 131 and moves a lever to engage an abutment 132 on lever 124 to move the valve 31 to reduce the output to zero. A second centrifugal governor is arranged in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the governor 95 and acts on a sleeve 65 to vary the phase relationship of the shafts 59, 64. This governor is loaded by a spring 89 which acts through a lever 85 on an abutment 83. The lever 85 carries a cam 127 which acts as an abutment for the lever 124 and limits the movement of the valve 31 in a direction to give maximum delivery. In a modification, a spring-loaded piston 139 is exposed to the pressure existing in the air induction pipe between the throttle valve 135 and the engine and is connected by a rod 140 to a lever 150 which rotates a cam 156 to move the lever 124a to adjust the axial position of the valve 31 and the movement is limited by the cam 127a. The cam 156 is carried by a lever 152 pivoted at 153, and a pin 161. carried by the lever 85a moves the lever 152 to modify the fuel supply to suit the engine at certain speeds. A further construction is described in which another centrifugal governor is provided which co-operates with the piston 139 and takes over control at high engine speeds. Specification 432,839 is referred to.
