Abstract

508,441. Thermometers. MALIVERT, J. E. Aug. 31, 1938, No. 25541. [Class 97 (iii)] To enable the effective length of a helical bimetallic coil to be varied, one end of the coil is adjustably secured by a screw 6 passing through a fixed part of the instrument and between two adjacent turns of the strip into a clamping block 8. As shown, the coil 2 is attached at one end to the spindle 9 of a pointer 10 and is adjustably secured at the other end to a cylindrical housing 1 having a flange 17 at the top. A loose ring 18 is held against the flange 17 by a spring 19 and a scale plate 12 is attached to the ring 18 by screws 20 so that it may be clamped to the flange 17 after being adjusted to the correct position. The thermometer may be arranged to float by providing a float chamber 3 and a ballast weight 4. Radial fins may be provided on the float 3, housing 1, or ballast weight 4. 5 is a collar of rubber. In a modification in which the float comprises a block of cork, the lower end of the coil 2 is adjustably secured to a plug which may be screwed into the housing 1 until the pointer 10 and the scale plate fixed to the housing 1 are in the correct relative positions.
