Abstract
507,754. Location by reflection of electromagnetic waves. PERCIVAL, W. S. Nov. 16, 1937, No. 31495. Drawings to Specification. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL] The location of an object, e.g. an aeroplane, which reflects pulses of electromagnetic radiation is obtained by determining the direction of the reflected pulses at a main receiver connected to a directional aerial. The directivity of the receiver system is sharpened by means of an auxiliary receiver connected to an aerial responsive to all directions except those making a small angle with the directive axis of the main aerial, the gain of the main receiver being automatically reduced during the reception of pulses by the auxiliary receiver. This reduction in gain is effected by the means and circuits described in Specifications 467,263 and 468,994, [both in Group XL]. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that obstacles at sea may be located by applying short pulses to the water and observing the direction of the reflected pulses.
