Abstract
507,364. Stuffing - box substitutes. BEAVER, C. J., and GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. April 12, 1938, No. 11208. [Class 122 (v)] [Also in Group XXII] In a metal extrusion press comprising a ram 2 operating within a container I charged with molten metal from a vessel 3, passage of molten metal between the ram and a bushing 5 forming the rear wall of the vessel 3 is prevented by means of an annular cooling channel 8 and two relatively deep grooves 7 formed in the bushing. The passage of a cooling medium through the channel 8 maintains sealing rings of solidified metal within the grooves 7.
