Abstract

507,202. Making cycle front - fork assemblies. HERCULES CYCLE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., and ROWE, A. E. Dec. 4, 1937, No. 33598. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A process for forming a front-fork assembly for a cycle consists in simultaneously welding a steering tube f, Fig. 1, and two fork tubes g to opposite sides of a tubular crown e, the ends of the fork tubes being fitted with liners h to bring their wall thickness up to that of the steering tube, or alternatively, up to that of lugs or sockets on the crown when the crown is a pressing or stamping and not a plain tube. The steering tube and fork tubes are gripped in the clamps of an electric flash-welding jig with the crown between them and the clamps advanced, after switching on the current, so that the parts are autogenously welded together. A lug on the crown for the steering tube may be fitted with a collar to bring it to the thickness of the steering tube. The liners for the fork tubes may be tubular and of D-section or they may be folded with their free ends n, Fig. 3, extending across the tubes.
