Abstract
505,998. Electrolytic etching. DUBILIER CONDENSER CO. (1925), Ltd. Nov. 19, 1937, No. 31924. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1936. [Class 41] [Also in Groups XXII, IV, XIII, and XXIII] Mechanically roughened foil, for use as an electrode in electrolytic condensers &c., may be subsequently chemically or electro-chemically etched. The process may be that described in Specification 467,024. Alternatively, the strip passes from the bath E to a bath G, Fig. 3, of sodium chloride solution and travels between electrodes G<SP>3</SP> connected to the negative lead of a source of current H, while a brush H<SP>1</SP> connected to the positive lead bears on the foil. The electrodes may be formed of the alloy sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Monel." The bath is maintained at boiling point either by the electric current alone or by a separate heater. The strip is then washed by sprays K<SP>1</SP>, passed through a bath M of isopropanol, and dried over an electric heater O<SP>1</SP>. Alternatively, the isopropanol is sprayed on to the foil. The tendency to etch the upper surface to a greater extent than the lower surface may be compensated for by passing the film through the bath closer to the lower electrode G<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 4. The use of electrodes G<SP>4</SP>, G<SP>5</SP>, Fig. 5, comprising series of parallel rods leads to uniform boiling and the free escape of gases. Electrodes R, Fig. 6, or R<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, counteract the tendency to excessive etching at the edges.
