Abstract
489,884. Etching. MALLORY PATENTS HOLDING CO., Ltd. May 25, 1937, No. 14548. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1936. [Class 100 (ii)] Metal for use in the manufacture of electrodes for electrolytic condensers and the like is etched by contacting the metal with a metal electropositive thereto and subjecting the contacted metal to the action of an etching solution having an acidity such that its pH value is below zero. Aluminium foil 10 is passed successively through tanks 12 ... 16 and then through a drier 17. The tank 14 contains an etching-fluid through which the foil passes between a screen-drum 19 and a screen-belt 21 both made of copper of about 100 mesh, the inside surface of the drum being exposed to the fluid, which consists of hydrochloric acid containing 15-25 per cent of fullstrength acid but not exceeding 50 per cent. The tank 12 contains a cleaning-fluid such as caustic soda solution or hydrofluoric acid, and the tanks 13, 15, 16 contain water for washing the foil. In a modification, the drum and belt are omitted, and the foil is passed through a solution of a displaceable metal ion such as lead, copper, or nickel, e.g. a 0À5 to 2À0 per cent solution of copper or lead chloride, to deposit a thin porous layer of metal on the foil before etching. In place of a metal ion, metal powder or metal compounds such as copper sulphide, copper oxide, or lead oxide may be used. Specification 453,042 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes apparatus in which the contacting metal is added to the etching- bath. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
