Abstract

505,830. Glass manufacture. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 28, 1938, No. 37630. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1937. [Class 56] [Also in Group V] A ceramic mix comprises titanium dioxide and a preformed substantially alkali-free glass adapted to bond the titanium dioxide particles into a dense mass when the mass is fired to vitrifaction. The material is suitable for electric insulation purposes, e.g. in condensers. Examples of glass mixes are : (1) 72 parts by weight of silica, 8 of titanium dioxide, and 20 of boron oxide; (2) 39À8 parts of silica, 16À8 of titanium dioxide, 13À8 of aluminium oxide, and 29À6 of calcium oxide; (3) 29À8 of titanium dioxide, 33À6 of silica, 11À6 of aluminium oxide, and 25 of calcium oxide ; (4) 15 of titanium oxide, 18 of silica, 2 of aluminium oxide, and 65 of lead oxide (Pb.O). In preparing the ceramic material 90-95 per cent of titanium dioxide and 5-10 per cent of glass are milled together, moulded under pressure and fired between 1150 and 1450‹ C., e.g. Orton cone 10. Part of the preformed glass may be replaced by non-clayey bonding components such as magnesia, beryllia, calcium titanium silicate, or mixtures of two or more of these. Specification 505,165, [Group V], is referred to.
