Abstract
505,558. Transmitting mechanical power. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and JEWITT, D. E. Nov. 8, 1937, No. 30612. [Class 38 (iv)] A transmission system suitable for transmitting power from a prime mover to a driven transmission shaft 13 such as a ship's propeller shaft comprises a shaft 14 coupled to a prime mover, an inner rotor member 1 secured to the shaft 14 and having on it an excitation winding 5, an outer rotor member 3 secured to the driven transmission shaft 13 concentrically with it and free to rotate coaxially with respect to it and having on it an excitation winding 6, and an intermediate freely rotatable coaxial member 9 carrying armatures 2 and 4 having windings 8 and 7 co-operating with the rotor windings 5 and 6 respectively ; means including slip-rings 16 and reversing switch 20 are also provided for connecting the phases of the armature windings 7 and 8 and braking means 10 for normally holding stationary the intermediate member 9.
