Abstract

505,188. Tempering glass. PILKING- TON BROS., Ltd. (Soc. Anon. des Manufactures des Glaces et Produits Chimiques de St. Gobain, Chauny, & Cirey) Nov. 5, 1937, No. 30391. [Class 56] Relates to the method of tempering sheet glass in which the glass is chilled by jets of air from holes or nozzles 3 on blowing-frames 2. According to the present invention, the nozzles in cach frame are spaced apart a distance of not more than five-eighths of an inch, and are situated not more than this distance from the glass sheet during cooling. Pads 5, of carbon or other heat-resisting material, attached to the blowing-frames or to separate supports, hold the sheet 1 stationary during chilling and prevent a thin sheet from warping. The close spacing of the jets prevents irisation of the tempered sheet.
