Abstract

505,050. Spring frames for motorcycles &c. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. Dec. 16, 1937, Nos. 34880, 34881, 34882, and 34883. Convention dates, Dec. 16, 1936, Feb. 18, 1937. March 18, 1937, April 2, 1937. [Class 136 (iii)] A spring suspension for a motor-cycle &c. wheel comprises a pair of link members 'or arms forming a fork pivoted to the vehicle frame and carrying the wheel, each of the arms engaging a slot in a piston sliding against the action of opposed coil springs in two opposed cylinders secured to the vehicle frame, each of the arms being mounted in the slot by means of two joints or abutments respectively below and above the longitudinal axis of the arm so as to allow both longitudinal and pivotal movements of the arm in the slot ; and is characterized in that each of such joints is constituted by two coacting guide members rigidly mounted on or integral with the piston and arm respectively, or by a resilient member (e.g. of rubber) secured to the piston and arm and acting in shear to effect a guiding action. In the form shown. in Fig. 1, the fork arms 3, pivoted at 4 to the main frame 5, are . formed with flattened ends 6, each of which passes through a slot 7 in the solid central part of a piston 8 and engages by an elongated slot 10 a transverse pin 9 passing through the piston, the slot permitting the required sliding and pivotal movements. The piston 8 slides in upper and lower cylinders 11, which contain springs 14 and are connected together by a tubular member 12, each pair of connected cylinders being detachably secured to the frame 5 by bolts 13. In a modification, the upper and lower edges of the flattened ends 6 are provided with curved abutment members adapted to. roll on screw bolts mounted (e.g. adjustably) in the. piston so as to,project into the slot 7. In another modification, the piston carries rollers engaging curved abutment cheeks on the upper and lower edges of the end 6. In a further modification, deformable rubber buffers are interposed between the piston and the upper and lower edges of the end 6, and are secured thereto by discs having flanged edges embracing shouldered parts. The ends (i may be of channel form, providing flanged top and bottom edges of increased bearing area. Specification 450.024 is referred to.
