Abstract

[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Groups XL and XXXVIII] An electron - discharge device for translating mechanical movements into electrical variations comprises a gas-tight envelope 1, an electron gun system adapted to project a defined jet or beam of electrons in a predetermined direction, a first collector electrode 7 in the path of the jet or beam and a second collector electrode 8 which is movable with respect to the first electrode and is so arranged to intercept the electron flow to the first collector electrode to an extent which varies with its position. The electron gun system comprises a rectilinear cathode 2, a control electrode 3, an accelerator anode 4 and a screen and suppressor-electrode 5, these members being provided with aligned slots 3a, 4a, 5a. The collector electrode 8 is attached by a wire 8a to a flexible diaphragm 6 which forms part of the envelope 1 and which may be directly or indirectly vibrated by sound waves. The device may be used as a gramophone pick-up by a connection between the diaphragm 6 and a needle engaging a record. The second collector electrode may be. connected to an electrostatic or electromagnetic link controlled by the primary source of mechanical or acoustical vibration.
