Abstract
503,837. Bookbinding. WILLIAMS, R. A. Oct. 7, 1937, No. 27250. [Class 16] In edition bookbinding the binding means comprises a number of oppositely inclined locking keys including one near each end of the stack of sheets or signatures, each key having an oblique tongue extending into an oblique slot in the stack's edge, and a backing. member associated with the keys to hold them in place. The signatures &c. 10 are first stapled together, then provided with two slots 11, one near the upper and the other near the lower end, and directed towards the centre of the assembly, and a casing comprising a pair of cover boards 14 having a flexible spine 16 and with two slots 11<1> therein is placed over the signatures so that the slots 11, 11<1> coincide. The casing and signatures are held together by two key or wedge members 20, shaped as shown, having tongues 22 which enter the slots, and sides 24 and back 21 which embrace the spine 16. A rigid channel or backing member 34 is then fitted over the spine 16 of the casing either by springing it in position or by sliding it longitudinally of the spine, and is retained in position by folded ends 39, and sides 38 which embrace the edges 24<1> of the wedges 21. The end papers of the book are glued to the covers. The wedges and channel are preferably of metal. As shown, the casing comprises cover boards having rear longitudinal bevelled edges 14<1> joined by a cloth strip forming the spine 16, but it may comprise plain cover boards encased in cloth. Additional wedges and slots may be provided, and in one form two slots near the centre of the back of the signatures may be engaged by one wedge with two integral tongue portions.
