Description

Jan.'19, 1943. M. MXTNICK 2,308,770
BINDING FOLDER FOR PERIODICALS Filed Aug. 9, 1940 I INVENTOR. fEYER M/T /V/CK ATTORNEY Jimmie Patented Jan. 19, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention relates generally to folders for binding periodicals or magazines, but more specifically to a folder having a back member against which each periodical is secured by fastening means piercing the leaves of the periodical adjacent the binding and penetrating the inside of the back member of the folder thereby resulting in an integrated single volume.
The main object of the invention resides in the provision of a folder wherein each of a plurality of periodicals is adapted to be firmly and detachably secured to the inside of the back member by the use of fastening means piercing the leaves of the periodical, said fastening means being anchored to the inside of the back member.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a folder having means associated therewith whereby periodicals may be permanently mounted against the back member thereof to form an integrated and firmly bound volume and wherein any periodical may be removed therefrom without altering the binding of the adjacent periodicals within the folder.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a folder for permanent and detachable binding of one or a plurality of periodicals in a simple, expedient and eflicient manner and wherein no binding knowledge and use of tools are necessary.
These objects and other incidental ends and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the progress of the disclosure and as pointed out in the appended claims.
Accompanying this specification is a drawing showing preferred forms of the invention wherein corresponding reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of the lower edge of the folder showing a plurality of periodicals bound therein.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure 1 along the-plane 22 thereof and shows a pair of fastening members securing the leaves of an intermediate fastened periodical against the inside of the back member of the folder.
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of a modified pair of fastening members secured together by an elastic band.
Figure 4 is a view in elevation of another modified form of a pair of fastening members slidably secured to each other.
In acordance with the invention and in accordance with the preferred forms shown, the folder comprises a conventional top and bottom cover l0 and I I movable about a back member l2. The back member I2 on the inside thereof is provided with an engaging strip adapted to grip fastening means associated with the folder and preferably in the form of sharp ended arms of hook members. As shown, however, back member I2 has secured to the inner side a strip of double ply material |3--|4, the outer ply [4 being of relatively softer material.
In order to bind a single or a plurality of periodicals IE to the inside of back member I2, it is merely necessary to open the periodical l5 preferab?y at the mid-portion l6 and pierce the edges adjacent the binding with fastening members such as I! and cause anchorage thereof against the inside strip Iii-l4 of the back member I2 by forcing said fastening means into engagement therewith. The fastening members I! shown are composed of hook members having the arms l8 set on? at an angle from the complementary arms IS, the latter being adapted to lie between opposite leaves of the periodical adjacent the binding. As shown in Figure 2, arms is are seen to piece ply l4 (such as cork) and enter ply !3 of harder material (such as wood). As has been before stated, a single ply of engaging material will suffice but by the use of a harder base ply I 3, anchorage of arms I8 is better effectuated.
It is to be noted that parallel arms [9 of the hook members Il may be connected together by a preferably elastic band 20 such as by means of tubular sleeves 2|. The ends of each of the sleeves engage one end of hook arm l9 and one end of band 20.
The outer surface of ply l4 may be provided with a series of grooves M for the recepit of the edges of a series of periodicals l5 adapted to be assembled together to form a single volume, each periodical being adapted to be independently bound against the inside of the back member l2 as heretofore described.
In Figure 3 are shown a pair of hook members 22 joined together by an elastic 23. Hook members 22 along the non-piercing arms are provided with eyes 24 to engage said elastic 23. Here again it is unnecessary to utilize the elastic band 23. The purposes of the bands 20 and 23 are to join together and pull toward each other each pair of fastening members. Similarly in Figure 4 hook members 25 are slidably secured to each other by the expedient of long non-piercing arms 26 each having an eye 21 at the end thereof.
In each of the fastening members shown, the piercing arms are disposed at an angle to the of permanently and detachably binding either a single or a plurality of loose periodicals to form a permanently bound volume.
Work of a professional binder, and the only materials necessary are the folder and the hooks as described. 7 r
In the use of the expression periodicals or magazines throughout this specification, it is understood that single sheets containing writing or printing thereof as well as pamphlets which are periodically issued for purposes of being bound into a single volume are included thereunder. In the binding of such single sheets and pamphlets by means of the folder and fastening means above described, it is merely necessary to assemble said'loose sheets and pamphlets together in the form of a book, and thereafter pierce the rear. edges along the folded portion of the middle sheet against the inside of the back member [2 by means of the fastening means or hooks as shown. In so doing, it is unnecessary to start with a previously bound periodical in the application of the invention herein,
I wish it understood that minor changes. and variations in the integration, material, location and construction of parts, may all be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A folder for binding periodicals including a back member, spaced hook members to secure each periodical to the inside of the back, each of said hook members having one arm bent obliquely to pierce the leaves of each periodical adjacent the binding and penetrate the inside portion of V the back for anchorage thereto, the other arms V In appearance and eificiency, the binding is equivalent to the of said hook'members being expansively connected together and disposed along said leaves adjacent the binding.
2. A folder, for binding periodicals including a back member having a series of adjacent grooves on the inside to receive the rear edges of a plu-i rality of periodicals, spaced fastening means adapted to secure each periodical to a groove of the back member, said fastening means obliquely piercing the leaves of, each periodical adjacent the binding thereof and penetrating the groove of said back for anchorage thereto, a member. ex-
pansively connecting the fastening means for each periodical.
3. A folder for binding periodicals including a back member having at least a resilient portion 4. A folder for binding periodicals'including a a back member having a series of adjacent grooves on the insideto receive the rear edges of a plurality of periodicals, the said back member having at least a resilient portion on the inside, spacedifastening means adapted to secure each periodical to a grooveof the back member, said fastening mean obliquelypiercing the leaves of each periodical adjacent the binding thereof and penetrating the groove of said back for anchorage thereto, a member expansively connecting the fastening means for each periodical.
5. A folder forblnding loose sheets-and pamphlets including a back member, spaced fasten-' ing members adapted tosecure each of the loose sheets or pamphlets to the inside of saidback member, the said fastening members obliquely piercing the leavesof each of the saidloose sheets or pamphlets adjacent the rear edges thereof and penetrating the back member for anchorage thereto, a member expansively connecting the spaced fastening members.
