[Class 112] A sewing-machine attachment for producing zigzag stitching by lateral oscillation of the presser-foot comprises a frame 10, fixed to the lower end of the presser-bar at 13, formed at its lower edge with a flange 11 to which an arm 50 on the presser-foot 48 is pivoted at 51. A lever 20 pivoted at 19 on the frame 10 has a forked end on one arm to engage a screw on the. needle-bar and a lug 36 and screw 24 on the other arm to actuate an arm 32, pivoted on the frame at 31, which oscillates the presser-foot about its pivot 51 by means of two pawls 38, 39 pivoted to the arm 32. The screw 24, by which the amplitude -of oscillation of the arm 32 and the presser-foot is varied, is frictionally held in its adjusted position by a spring 27, which also limits the movement of the screw by engaging the head and a shoulder on the screw. The pawls 38, 39, of which the latter has a slightly longer stroke, are pressed together by a spring 58 and are notched to engage the arm 50 of the presser-foot, the notches and the arm 59 being so sheped that the presser-foot is moved only when the needle-bar rises, the movement being in opposite directions on alternate strokes. The oscillating mechanism may be rendered ineffective by means of a lever 55, pivoted at 51 on the frame flange 11, which can be moved between the pawls 38, 39 to hold them clear of the arm 50; a spring washer on the pivot 51 holds the members 50, 55 in their set position. The presser-foot 48, roughened on its underside, has a needle slot 57 and'a cord guiding depression 59 adapted to co-operate with a member 60, Fig. 11, which is attached by a screw and dowel pin engaging holes in the presser-foot; the device 60, in addition to a needle slot and cord guide, has notches 69 for guiding tapes to be attached by zigzag stitching over the tape edge. In place of integral attaching means 13, interchangeable adapters may be provided for securing the frame 10 to various types of machine.
