503,492. Preventing reverse movement. CRISP, J. Oct. 6, 1937, No. 26886. [Class 103 (i)] In means for preventing retrogression of vehicles or machines comprising a free-wheel device of which one part is driven by the mechanism of the vehicle &c., and the other part is normally held stationary, the holding means comprises fluid in a closed circuit provided with a valve which can be opened to permit reverse movement when desired. A free-wheel device, Fig. 3, disposed in a casing 11, bolted to the gear box of a motor vehicle has the part 15 integral with a toothed wheel 16 meshed with an input wheel of the gear box and the part 17 integral with an eccentric 18 adapted to drive a piston 22 in a cylinder 12 containing liquid. Valves 24 are normally seated so that the piston and part 17 are locked and rearward or forward movement of the vehicle is prevented according as a forward or reverse gear is engaged; By means of a cam rod 26 the valves 24 can be unseated thus permitting rotation of the part 17 and movement of the vehicle in both directions. The rod 26 may be operated by a hand or foot lever or by the change gear lever which may be in two parts 27, 29 with toothed parts 30 engaged by a spring 31. The part 27 operates the rod 26 by a cam 32 and lever 33 whereby the valves 24 are unseated in the neutral position of the part 27. The toothed engagement of the parts 27, 29 permits movement of the part 27 to the neutral position, though movement of the other part may be temporarily resisted by the gears. The free-wheel part 15 may be driven from a vehicle shaft the driving direction of which is reversed when the change gear is put into reverse and to render the free-wheel device effective to prevent movement of the vehicle in the undesired direction both in forward and reverse drive, the free-wheel part 15 may be driven from the shaft through an epicyclic gear adapted to act as a reversing gear under the control of the change gear lever.
