Abstract
503,069. Measures of length. MASCHINENFABRIK H. HAUSER AKT.-CES. Oct. 12, 1938, No. 29581. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1937. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a method of measuring small lengths wherein are utilized the varying parallel displacements of a luminous ray, which occur when a refractive medium having plane parallel surfaces through which the ray passes is rotated so as to vary the angle of incidence. A slide 2 can be moved along a frame 1 to which the straight edge 3 to be measured is fixed by suitable means. A spindle 5 which carries a piece of glass with plane parallel faces is pivoted in the slide 2. A fork 6 depending from the spindle engages a cross pin 9 fixed to a rod 8 slidably mounted on the slide 2. The rod 8 is pressed by a spring 14 against a cam disc on a shaft 11 in a vertical plane passing through the rod 8. The shaft carries a calibrated measuring wheel 10. The optical system comprises an angular telescope 15 on the slide 2, a source of light 16 and a prism 17 arranged above the parallel plate 4. In use the wheel 10 is set to an initial position on the mark 18 and the ray traversing the plate 4 on to the end of the line to be measured. In addition, the pointer of the slide 2 is set to the zero of the scale along which it moves. The slide 2 is moved as long as whole units can be read and then the wheel 10 moved until the ray coincides with the end of the line to be measured. The wheel 10 gives the fraction to be added to the units on the scale.
