Abstract
409,365. Surveying - instruments. GREENLY, K. H., 66, Heston Road, Hounslow, Middlesex. Oct. 31, 1932, No. 30550. [Class 97 (ii).] Apparatus for determining the radius of curvature of railway tracks, roads, &c. by measuring the middle ordinate on a known length of chord comprises three components, a telescope with the optical axis arranged vertically, a measuring rule, and a sighting pin or point source of light. In one form, each component comprises a beam 11 carrying at one end a pair of spaced brackets 13 for engaging the rail or kerb 14, and at the other end a leg 18 which is slidable in a split ball 17 held between pads on plates 15 secured to the beam 11. A butterfly nut 19 enables the leg 18 to be clamped. The telescope 1 with its supporting tower 2 and the casing 3 of a reflecting prism are rotatable about a vertical axis by the tangent screw 6 on a table 5 which is pivoted to the beam 11 by screws 8 and may be adjusted by levelling screws 9. The rule 21, Fig. 4, is mounted on its beam 11 with the central zero graduation at the same distance from the rail 14 as the telescope axis and the pin 23, Fig. 5, is mounted at a similar distance upon its beam 11. In use the components are placed against the rail at spaced intervals, the rule being mid-way between the telescope and pin. The telescope is directed onto the pin and the graduation of the rule in the same line of vision is noted. According to the Provisional Specification, the components may be clamped on the rail by screws or springs.
