[Class 65 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] Motor-vehicle bonnet flaps are connected by a spirally curved hinge or hinges to the sides of a channel-shaped supporting member, the flaps being extended above the hinges so that in the central longitudinal line of the vehicle their edges are separated by only a narrow gap, underneath which the channel serves for disposal of rain water. As shown in Fig. 6, each bonnet flap 10, 12, is doubled back and bent downwardly to form vertical flanges 36 to which are welded or riveted curled hinge members 32 coiled round correspondingly formed fixed hinge members 24 attached to or formed integrally with the sides of a channel member 18 extending between the radiator and cowl of the vehicle. The doubled back portions of the flaps preferably bear on the outer hinge portions 32, the edges 39 being separated by a gap allowing clearance for pivotal movements, which are limited by the hinge construction or by abutment of the edges 39 against the walls 20 of the channel. To increase the range of pivotal movement, the walls &c. may be inclined to form an acute angle with the base of the channel. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the flap extensions 60 are depressed to lie in the plane of the pivotal axes, enabling the gap between the edges 39 to be reduced to a minimum. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the channel member 52 is formed as an integral extension of one of the flaps, enabling the connection to be effected by a single hinge. The hinge members are inter-engaged by longitudinally sliding one into the other, after which separation may be prevented by distorting a portion of one into a gap or slot provided in the other.
