Abstract
502,567. Aircraft alighting gear. COWEY, L. H. Aug. 17, 1937, No. 22610.- [Class 4] Relates to retractable or partially retractable aircraft tail wheels or their equivalents of the kind forming the subject-matter of Specification 463,401 which areadapted to support the tail in a substantially horizontal position when landing. The tail wheel or its equivalent is supported from the fuselage by upwardly and forwardly inclined radius rods 6 and a telescopic compression strut or oleo leg 2 pivoted at its lower end to the wheel &c. carrying member, and at its upper end to a forwardly projecting link pivoted to the fuselage, the link being movable upwardly and forwardly to cause the wheel &c., radius rods and compression strut to be moved to a position in which they lie wholly or partly within the fuselage. In one form, Fig, 1, the tail wheel 1, which may partake of a free or restrained castoring movement, is carried in forks 4 mounted in a bearing 5 rigid with the radius rods 6 pivoted to the fuselage at 8. The strut 2 is pivoted to the forks 4 at 3 and to a link 10 pivoted to the fuselage at 11. Retraction is effected by a hydraulic jack 13 pivoted to the fuselage at 11 and to a lever 14 rigid with the radius rods. On actuation of the jack, a snap device 12, which holds the link in the position shown, is released to allow the assembly to move to the dotted position. The fuselage is suitably recessed to receive the wheel &c. in their retracted position and the recesses may be formed in a detachable bottom panel of the fuselage. In a second form, Fig. 7, the link 17 is pivoted to the fuselage at 8 so as to form with the radius :rods 6 and strut 2 a triangulated structure, and the jack 13 is pivoted to the link at the point 20. The link is held in the position shown by a snap device 19. In this form, the wheel when in the retracted position supports the aircraft in a tail down position suitable for take-off.
