Abstract

502,110. Motor fuels. MOND, A. L. (Universal Oil Products Co.) Sept. 14, 1937, No. 25013. [Class 91] Relates to the production of stabilized motor fuel distillates from cracked distillates, e.g. from primary tars such as those produced in the distillation of coals, woods, lignites, oil shales, &c. by blending with phenolic substances, and comprises separating crude phenolic substances from such cracked distillates, preparing more highly effective phenolic inhibitor material therefrom and re-adding the more highly effective inhibitor material to the distillates. Thus, primary tars containing phenolic compounds are subjected to cracking treatment to produce low-boiling motor fuel fractions which are then treated with alkali to remove phenols, the phenols are separated by acidification and selected fractions of the phenols are returned to the fuel, preferably after refining, e.g. with sulphuric acid. Prior to treatment with alkali, the fuel fractions, may be treated with dilute acid to remove basic material which may be recovered and added to the re@med fuel in regulated amounts. Suitable phenolic fractions are obtained by redistillation, e.g. into 25‹ C. fractions, fractions boiling between 240 and 300‹ C., being preferred. A suitable amount comprises 0À01- 0À05 per cent. Examples are given of the treatment of crude motor fuels from cracked coal, wood and lignite tars.
