Abstract
502,022. Smoke-producing apparatus; electric heaters. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and HARVEY, W. W. Sept. 6, 1937, No. 24332. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group XI] Direction-of-wind indicating apparatus for aerodromes in which fuel is vaporized to produce a " smoke comprises a pipe 21 connected by a tube 20 to a tank 13 having a float controlled valve 17, 18 controlling the flow of fuel to the pipe 21 so as to maintain approximately a constant level of fuel within the pipe, the pipe being externally heated and extending upwardly above the level of. the apparatus and having a constriction 22 at its upper end through which a plume of vaporized fuel is emitted clear of the apparatus. The float operates in a separate chamber 16 and the fuel flows to the pipe 20 via the valve 26 which is operated by a solenoid 29, thence via the needle valve 24 which serves to adjust the flow of fuel. The pipe 21 may be electrically heated by the element 31 fed from the transformer 46 and surrounded by lugging 36 or may be provided with fins and heated by a blow-lamp. In the main compartment 15 of the tank is a float 37 which operates a main switch 42 thus disconnecting the heater current when the liquid falls below a certain level. The currents for operating the solenoid 29 and heating the pipe may be separately controlled from the control room. of the aerodrome.
