Abstract

501,570. Cigar - making machines. MJLLER, J. C. July 26, 1938, No. 22186. Convention date, Aug. 26, 1937. [Class 130] When a blocking member, provided at the delivery end of a-jig conveyer, is in a position to restrict the tobacco feed to a cigar-making machine, the member follows the movements of the conveyer. As shown, tobacco is fed by a hopper 13 on to a jig conveyer 1, which is mounted on a support 6, attached by arms 7 'to crank-pins 8, mounted on shafts 9, rotated through gearing 10, 11. Above the conveyer is a blocking member formed by a plate 64, which is of less width than the width of the channel'formed by the side walls 3, 4 of the conveyer and which is hinged to the hopper and inclined downwardly towards the delivery end of the conveyer. The plate is normally prevented from moving towards the conveyer by the engagement of a finger. 62 with a stop 63 on the plate. The conveyer has toothed grooves 2 across which the tobacco is delivered into a conduit 15 containing a flap 16. After a cam-actuated link 30 has rotated a stopper 28 to uncover an opening 26 in a chamber 27, the flap 16 is lowered by a bell-crank 20 actuated by a cam 23 to permit the tobacco accumulated on the flap to fall into the chamber 27. When the flap and stopper have been returned to the positions shown, a plunger 31 is advanced resiliently, by a link 35 connected to a bellcrank 37 actuated by a spring 39, to compress the tobacco in the chamber 27 and the portion forced into the chamber 32 is severed by a knife 33. As the plunger moves forward, a slotted bar 43 moves a roller 48 beneath a cam 50 on a lever 49 connected to a bell-crank 52, to prevent a cam 56 releasing the finger 62 holding the plate 64. Normally, the conveyer delivers a slight excess of tobacco into the conduit 15, and when an excess has accumulated in the chamber 27, the movement of the plunger 31 is arrested before the roller 48 engages the cam 50. The cam 56 then actuates the bell-crank 52 to release the finger 62, and the plate 64 moves by gravity or under the action of springs or weights, to restrict the supply of tobacco.
