Abstract

500,474. Coating with adhesives. SEALCONES, Ltd. Aug. 5, 1937, No. 21606. Convention date, Oct. 17, 1936. [Class 95] Paper or like fibrous sheet material is coated with a film of a thermoplastic adhesive, e.g., a film from <1>/800 to <2>/1000 inch in thickness, by forming a film of the desired thickness in a viscous state on an applying device, e.g. a printing plate or cylinder, transferring the previously formed film to the paper by contact, without contact between the paper and the applying device, and finally drying. The film may,be applied to the whole surface of the paper blank or only to desired areas, by use of an applying device of corresponding form. As shown, the adhesive is fed by rollers 12,11,10 to the raised area 9 on cylinder 8,and a blank B to be coated is carried into contact with the adhesive film on the applying device 9 by a platen 7 which moves from A to A<1> with the same linear speed as the applying device. The coated sheet 4 delivered to a conveyer C and through a heated chamber (not shown) or beneath gas burnets 17, which may extend over only apart of the conveyer. The applying device, 9 is of metal or other material to which the film adheres less strongly than to paper &c. The adhesive may consist of natural or synthetic resin and solvent, with or without water and a plasticizer. A thermoplastic non-adhesive material; e.g. paraffin wax, may be mixed with the adhesive and fused during the drying of the film so as to form a coating which prevents offsetting of the adhesive when coated sheets are stacked ; or such a coating maybe applied over the adhesive. The method of coating is described as applied to coating the edges 14, 15, 16 of blanks B to form the body portions of truncated conical containers ; the seams in the finished container become protected by the non-adhesive material, and the finished container or the blanks may be coated so as to be waterproof and /or oil and grease proof.
