Abstract
721,714. Coated films and papers; compound sheet materials. BRITISH SIDAC, Ltd. (Cornwell, R. T. K.). Aug. 11, 1952, No. 20173/52. Class 140. A heat-sealable wrapping material comprises a film or coating of polythene bonded to one or both sides of a layer of paper or regenerated cellulose sheet containing a thermoset resin. The paper or regenerated cellulose sheet may be impregnated with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a partly polymerized melamine-, urea-, ketone-, or phenol-formaldehyde resin, or the aqueous resin may be added to the pulp during the manufacture of the paper. The polythene is applied without the use of a solvent by hot-pressing a preformed film of polythene on to the resin-impregnated base, by applying powdered polythene which is melted, e.g. by a heated blade, by spraying powdered polythene through a flame, by transferring a layer of polythene from a metal surface, or by pressing a hot, freshly-extruded film of polythene on to the base by chilled rollers. The hot film may be stretched between the extruding device and the nip of the rolls, the surface of which may be plain, engraved, or embossed. The polythene may be modified by adding natural or synthetic rubber, wax, resin, bitumen, polyisobutylene, dyes, and pigments or fillers such as chalk and titanium dioxide. The product may be used as bottle top liners, wrapping and packaging, camouflage strips and netting. Specifications 623,355, [Group IV (a)], and 623,357 are referred to.
