[Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] In electric discharge devices fitted with one or more cantilever springs, such as thermionic valves in which such springs are used for tensioning the filamentary cathodes, the ends of the springs are clamped between strips of flexible insulating material such as mica, by means of a metal clamp. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement in which the ends of the springs 1, of molybdenum, are clamped between mica strips 2 by a clamp 4 of sheet, metal such as nickel bent tu U-shape. Spacing of the springs is obtained by fitting the ends into slots in an intermediate mica strip 3, or, alternatively, pressing the sides of the clamp and mica strips together between the springs as in Fig. 2 (not shown). In the complete valve assembly shown in Fig. 6, the clamp 4 has lugs welded to the anode supports 11 and the grid supports 8 are located by wires 12 clamped between the mica strips 2 between which the filament tensioning springs 1 are clamped.
