Abstract

499,611. Making paper &c. containers. FRAZER, G. E. Jan. 12, 1938, No. 1027. [Classes 66 and 94 (ii)] A paper &c. container, Fig. 2, is formed from sheet material lapped upon itself to form a cylindrical &c. sleeve with a stem 34 and bottom portion 8 formed at one end of the sleeve. Paper &c. in web form 10 is cut on the bias at 19 by rolls 11 carrying a blade 12, the severed blank being fed by tapes 14 to a rotatable mandrel 16 and formed into a tube 18 preferably of two or more thicknesses. One end 20 of the tube 18 overhangs the mandrel end 22, which is shaped with a convex surface 23, and a blade 28, carried by an arm 27, spring-biassed about a pivot 26, is moved to cause the end portion 20 of the tube to become partially twisted into the stem or handle portion 34. The rack-and-pinion mechanism operating the arm 27 also operates, through the pinion 38, a shaft 37 which next brings into operation spring - biassed tapered rolls 40, which consolidate the stem portion 34 of the container, and concave-surface rollers 46 which press the bottom 8 of the container to the shaft 23 of the mandrel end 22. The rod 24, carrying the mandrel end 22, is now moved through the mandrel to strip the formed container therefrom. which is filled with a confection and frozen.
