Abstract

499,496. Tumbler switches. TUCKER & CO., Ltd., J. H., and FUKE, F. C. July 24, 1937, No. 20508. [Class 38 (v)] A tumbler switch has means whereby a movable contact is caused to take a period of rest after a small initial movement and before its final complete separation from the fixed contact to minimize sparking in A.C. circuits. A dolly l operates through gearing l<1>, k<5> and a quick action spring m, a cam k which has a step k<3> joining two surfaces k<1>, k<2> whose profiles are arcs of circles concentric with the pivot of the cam k. Contacts j<1>, j<2> are held together by the engagement of the cam edge k<1> with a roller j<3> on a spring contact member j. With rotation of the cam k, the roller j<3> first moves up to engage the cam edge k<2> and open the contacts j<1>, j<2> a short distance, and then moves a much greater distance on engaging cam edge k<4> to complete the contact separation. Fig. 1 shows a two way switch wherein a stepped cam surface on each of two spring contact members b, d is engaged by a roller c<1>, c<4> on a lever c which is moved with a snap action by a lever operated spring loaded toggle mechanism.
