Abstract

<PICT:0497812/III/1> <PICT:0497812/III/2> An apparatus for cooling and heating low grade massecuite comprises a vertical column 13, a feed hopper 15 at the top of the column from which the massecuite descends over baffles 14 to a closed mixer 7 at the bottom, a magma pump 6 to remove the massecuite from the mixer and a blower 10 to force hot or cold air through the column against the flow of the descending massecuite. The hopper feed is adjustable by means of a sliding gate 30, Fig. 5, the top baffle has a serrated turned-up edge and the other serrated edges to distribute the massecuite uniformly. As the mixer 7 is closed on top it is provided with an inspection chamber 12, Fig. 4, at one side, communicating with the main chamber through an aperture 131. In use, massecuite from the crystallizer 21 is circulated via the gutter 22 and hopper 15 through the column 13 against a cold air flow, and then back through the mixer 7 and pipe 17 to the crystallizer again until the cooling has caused the crystals to reach the desired size. The heater 11 is then put into operation and the massecuite is circulated against a hot air flow until it is hot enough for treatment in the centrifugal 25 to which it passes via a valve 23 or via a byepass valve 19 and pipe 18.
