Abstract

497,811. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. (Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen) Sept. 27, 1937. Nos. 26137 and 26261. [Class 39 (i)] A characteristic having a positive or only slightly negative portion is obtained in a cold electrode lamp with a filling mainly of neon at 4-8 mms. pressure by adding to the neon 0À2-0À9 per cent of krypton or xenon or a mixture of these gases. Low pressures of other gases, particularly mercury, may be present. The electrodes are both cold and consist of hollow cylinders of sheet iron. Dimensions and running data are given of lamps with fillings of mercury and 6 mms. neon and 0À5 per cent krypton or xenon, and 6 mms. neon and 0À2 per cent krypton or xenon without mercury. Luminescent material may be provided within the lamps and mercury may be contained in an electrode to be kept warm by the discharge. The lamps preferably work on D.C. with suitable precautions against electrophoresis ; on A.C. auxiliary starting devices are necessary. Specifications 363,343 and 476,240 are referred to.
