[Class 40 (iii)] An optical system 14.. 20 forms on a receiving-screen 5 a cylindrical image, with definition in the direction of scanning, of modulated supersonic waves in a cell 2, and also forms a cylindrical image of the illuminated surface of a high-speed scanner 3 on the screen with definition at right-angles to the direction of the scanning-lines. An intermediate cylindrical image of an illuminated aperture 1 is formed in the cell, and a cylindrical image of the intermediate image is formed on the surface of the high-speed scanner. The direction of definition of both these images is at right-angles to the direction of movement of the supersonic waves. According to a modification, the intermediate image is omitted, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown). Specifications 439,236 and 451,132 are referred to.
