[Class 40 (iii).] A scanning device 4 co-operates with a lens system 6, 7 whose focal length can be varied so that the area of the screen 8 which is scanned may be varied without adjusting the distance D between the scanning device 4 and the screen 8. Preferably the lens system comprises two simple lenses, the separation of which is adjustable. The invention is applicable to transmitting and receiving apparatus and to spot-light and flood-light scanning.
