Abstract

496,961. Mercury switches. LINDSTROM, A. C. June 8, 1937, No. 15908. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 14, 1937.] [Class 38 (v)] In a mercury switch in which rotation of a receptacle about its axis 6, 7 as by a handle 8, causes mercury to connect the end caps 12, 13, e.g. by flowing through a hole 22 in a partition 21 insulating walls 23, 24 are provided to separate the surfaces of the mercury where the " make " and " break " takes place from the mercury surfaces in the neighbourhood of the caps 12, 13. By this means any particles and impurities from the caps 12, 13, which might assemble on the surface of the mercury are prevented from reaching the central portions of the surface. Apertures 25, 26 in the walls 23, 24 establish connection between the outer and inner portions of mercury and are arranged so as to be submerged beneath the surface in all positions of the switch. The space above the mercury may be hydrogen or mercury vapour. The caps 12, 13 are formed with sleeves 17, 18 which are soldered to hollow pivots 6, 7 which are of brass and conduct the current through the supporting arms 2, 3.
