Abstract

496,592. Blast - proof buildings. SCHRAMM, W., and RAKER, W., (trading as SICHERHEITSBAU - HELLBRUCK KOMMANDITGES). June 16, 1937, No. 16734. Convention date, March 13. [Class 0 (i)] A building for resisting blasting due to bomb attack is formed integrally with a base to constitute a rigid hollow body,' the base being disposed above ground level, and movably mounted on independent supports below ground level. The base b is formed as a gridwork comprising an outer frame o with axial and diagonal stiffeners p, q, and further diagonal stiffeners r arranged at right angles to the diagonals to divide the space enclosed into triangles. Fixed to this base are uprights a supporting grid floors c by means of gusset plates e and struts d, the whole constituting an integral hollow body capable of resisting shear due to blasting. The inner supports g for the building rise from a soleplate i so as to form a cellar space, and external sunk supports k are provided at the periphery, ball bearings f being interposed between the base b and each independent support g, k. Return spring arrangements may also be provided. Air spaces m may be provided adjacent the external wall n of the cellar space to reduce the forces of explosion of bombs alongside the structure, and in order to reduce the destruction due to a direct hit, the stiffeners r are disposed in staggered relationship on successive floors, so that as little free space as possible is provided for the passage of a bomb. Specification 479,636 is referred to.
