Abstract

Sulphite cellulose waste liquor is treated with an excess of lime, the precipitate is removed, and the liquor then brought to the desired pH value by passing the fermentation gases from the butyl fermentation of an equal amount of treated liquor through it. The calcium carbonate thus precipitated may be separated. Entrained alcohols and acetone are thus retained in the liquors being treated. The liquor is preferably freed from furfurol and formic acid as by blowing air or steam through the hot liquor before lime treatment.
