[Class 59] [Also in Group VIII] Fibres and fibre bundles in pulp are disintegrated without cutting or grinding the fibres by passing the pulp through a shell 5, Fig. 3, within which are mounted two or more sets of thin, blunt-edged, closely-arranged plates 2, 8 of resilient material, e.g. stainless steel, at least one set being rotated, and at least one set 2 being in the form of discs with portions cut away so that the remaining parts form propeller-shaped bodies, Fig. I, the fibres and fibre bundles being gripped by the edges of the formed blades and drawn between the side faces of adjacent plates, which are at right-angles to the axis of rotation. The other set or sets of plates may have the same shape, may consist of whole discs, or of single blades 8, Fig. 3, mounted on a shaft 9 or fixed to the shell. The cut-away portions of the discs may stop short of the periphery, leaving a rim connecting the propeller-like blades. The blades of a set of propeller-shaped places of a set may be angularly displaced singly, or in groups. Rotating and non-rotating sets of blades may be adjusted in position axially, or reciprocated, relatively to one another. The shaft 3 may be stationary and the shell may rotate. All the sets of plates or blades may rotate in different directions, or in the same direction at different velocities. All shafts may be driven, or some driven and the remainder displaced by friction.
