Abstract

911,658. Grooving sheet material. SVENSKA TANDSTICKS A.B. Dec. 2, 1960 [Feb. 10, 1960], No. 41618/60. Class 31 (1). [Also in Groups XXII and XXIII] Cardboard 2 which is advanced along a feed path 1 has a groove 21 cut in the surface thereof by the edge between a rifled envelope surface 9 and a plane, or concave, and preferably smooth end surface 10 of a rotating, cylindrical or conical, cutter 8, the axis of rotation of which forms an acute angle with the plane of the feed path. The apparatus shown comprises a plurality of motor-driven cutters 8 carried by holders 5 which are each adjustable laterally and vertically in relation to the feed path 1. The teeth 22 of the cutters preferably have a a negative chipping angle. The axes of the cutters are preferably situated in planes forming an angle of 90 to 110 degrees with the feed direction of the cardboard. Each cutter is given such a rotational speed that the product of the diameter in centimetres of the cutting edge of the cutter and the square of the number of revolutions per second of the cutter is at least 130,000. Preferably, the cardboard is advanced with its grain perpendicular to the feed direction of the cardboard. The end surface of the cutter may be provided with teeth. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the teeth of the cutter at their ends are bevelled angularly to the end surface of the cutter for forming a flat bottom in each of the grooves.
